VISUALLY IMPAIRED 4TH-GRADER H

great bridge

Like many other girls her age, 10-year old Kailey Christian, a fourth-grader at Crestwood Intermediate loves to read. The only difference is, she happens to be legally blind.

Kailey and her twin, Hailey, were born 10 weeks premature. Because of complications during pregnancy, doctors did not expect Kailey to survive.

"She's a fighter," mother Carla Christian said. "She fought her way through the NICU in Hawaii," where the family was stationed before moving to Virginia. The family relocated to Hampton Roads to be closer to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters where Kailey had a kidney transplant in 2004.

Blindness is one of many side effects of premature birth.

"When you are born early, for some reason there are extra blood vessels that grow behind your eyes," Christian explained. The muscles in Kailey's eyes never relaxed, causing her to suffer from partial detachments of the retina.

Though Kailey can read print, her family decided to train her on Braille last April. Her vision slowly continues to deteriorate.

"She does have partial vision," Christian said. "She has peripheral vision in her right eye, low vision in her left eye. She does see a little."

Kailey, whose father Brandon is in the military, picked up Braille reading right away.

"(She) is fun to work with because she loves to learn Braille and loves to show Replica watches it to other people," said Debra Pro st, a teacher of visually impaired students. "Even last year when she first started, her classroom special-ed teacher had her show her classmates (what she has learned)."

Pro st nominated Kailey for two awards from the National Federation of the Blind. She won the Jennifer Baker Award, a national award that recognizes students who have overcome other setbacks and disabilities to learn Braille.

"When I found out (I won), I was excited," Kailey said.

She was honored during the fourth-grade awards ceremony, where she received a check for $50 and an all-expenses paid trip for her and her mother to attend the National Federation of the Blind meeting in Dallas this week .

Kailey also received checks from the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children as well as the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.

Frederic Shroeder, president of the National Federation for the Blind of Virginia, said the Jennifer Baker Award is one of many the NFB sponsors to encourage and inspire young people.

"I think recognition such as this (award) is intended to recognize what an individual has done thus far, but also to indicate that there is a support system of people who believe in their future and their potential," he said.

Kailey is certainly showing a lot of potential. She takes advantage of every opportunity to teach her friends and family about Braille reading.

For her Girl Scout troop, Kailey showed them how to use a Braille reader, an electronic device that displays Braille characters for easy reading.

INNERVIEWS

Hes celebrating his 57th birthday today. The name on the birth certificate recorded in Detroit reads Joseph William Loyd Jr. Most people know him simply as JoLoyd, the drummer for Stratus, one of Charlestons most enduring bands. Would you believe 36 years? During the Pac Man craze in the 1980s, people knew him as The Glove, the best Pac Man player anywhere. The single white glove he wore to better maneuver the joystick became his signature. Like most musicians, hes also identified by the requisite day job. At Fox 11, his working home for 16 years, hes known as a master control operator. Hes soft-spoken, laid back and serene, an anomaly compared to the hyper intensity that characterizes many entertainers, especially drummers. Hes blessed with a virtue that contributed greatly to his success at the Pac Man machine: patience. It defines him.

"I grew up in southwest Detroit, in the city. My father drove trucks, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom. My brother, Overton, is a famous artist. He does album covers for George Clinton and won a Grammy for Clinton's 'Atomic Dog' video. Another brother, David, started playing piano when he was 2. He plays with me in Stratus.

"I started playing drums when I was 3. My dad was a drummer. It was in my blood. A neighbor invited me to join the band in elementary school and, after that, I was playing all the time in orchestras, concert bands and percussion ensembles throughout Detroit.

"It was the Motown era in Detroit, and I was a part of it. The Temptations used to sing in a club in my block. Every Christmas and Thanksgiving, there was a special concert at the Fox Theater, and they had all the artists there. In junior high, I was introduced to jazz. I saw a lot of jazz musicians Omega watches in Detroit. Music was all around me.

"In high school, I played in the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra. I won a Duke Ellington scholarship for private lessons. I was with Young Americans in Concert when I was in the 12th grade. Musicians were selected in 48 states, 540 of us, and we toured all over the U.S. and overseas. Our first concert was in Carnegie Hall, then the Lincoln Center. We performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It took 11 buses to travel through Europe.

"We were invited to the White House and to President Nixon's signing of the bill allowing 18-year-olds to vote. They chose about six 18-year-olds to sign the bill, and I was one of them. My picture was on the front page of The New York Times. Years later, my brother was thumbing through a civics book and saw my picture at the signing.

"In college, I was part of a band called UHURU Unlimited. The female vocalist said my name, Joseph Loyd, sounded better with both names together. So everybody usually calls me JoLoyd.

"I went to Michigan State for two-and-a-half years, studying music. I wanted to hit the road. I dropped out to join Stratus. Trying to keep UHURU together, I had musicians in Ann Arbor, 60 miles away, and musicians in Grand Rapids, 60 miles away. One of the guys living in Ann Arbor was from West Virginia. He invited Stratus up. I was doing a special show at Michigan State, and I invited him to come up to do the show, and he brought Stratus with him. Stratus needed a drummer.

"I came here in 1976. Stratus is still going strong, 36 years now. Stanley and Lamont Bolland started the band and are still with it. We've had a lot of success. We've gone overseas, performing for the military from Germany to Japan. We played in Haiti, Honduras, Spain, all over the world.

Ireland fail a French test
DATE: 08/02/2010 00:10:19 / MOOD:

Byline: By Morgan Richards

Ireland's attempt to avenge their humiliating World Cup exit ended in failure as France made a powerful start to their RBS Six Nations campaign in Paris yesterday.

Coach Eddie O'Sullivan saw yesterday's championship opener - a rematch of the Melbourne quarter-final - as the perfect opportunity for Ireland to redeem themselves following their 43-21 drubbing at the Telstra Dome.

But trailed 11-3 at the interval after Vincent Clerc had crossed for France but were back in the reckoning three minutes into the second half when Anthony Foley strolled over in the corner.

However, France replied with a two-try salvo in the space of four minutes, debutant second row Pascal Pape and centre Yannick Jauzion both crossing.

Stuttgart

Ireland replied through Tyrone Howe. But Les Bleus underlined their superiority before the final whistle when scrum-half Jean-Baptiste Elissalde scampered over.

Fly-half Frederic Michalak proved his nightmare evening against England in the World Cup semi-finals was a distant memory by slotting 17 points.

Asked to fill the shoes of hamstring victim Brian O'Driscoll, Leinster centre Gordon D'Arcy set up Howe's try and went close himself in the first half.

Referee Chris White awarded the Irish an early penalty, and Ronan O'Gara made no mistake.

jewelry-f

Michalak levelled the score after Ireland had strayed offside during Les Bleus' ensuing attack. But O'Sullivan's men

threatened briefly down the left flank before France snuffed out the danger and launched a raid which ended with Toulouse winger Clerc diving over in the right corner. Michalak.

stretched his side's lead with his second penalty.

Ireland poured forward after the restart and were rewarded as O'Gara unlocked the French defence.

The visitors used their forwards to drive up the right before O'Gara was handed possession. He chipped ahead, caught his own kick and drew Nicolas Brusque before feeding Foley who strolled in.

O'Gara landed the extras but Les Bleus responded with a try finished by Pape.

Jauzion burst from deep and found Christophe Dominici in support. He took the ball forward before feeding Serge Betsen, with the big-hitting back then creating the space for Pape to cross.

Jauzion touched down himself - strolling in under the posts. Michalak pandora glass beads added both conversions and a penalty.

Ireland

met with more success when play was switched right, D'Arcy breaking through and off-loading to Howe who finished the move. O'Gara converted, but France were not done yet as Elissalde scampered home and Michalak converted.

Ireland fall just short of mir
DATE: 08/02/2010 00:10:10 / MOOD:

Byline: Patrick Collins

Sporting CP Lisbon

AS THE closing whistle signalled an end to the fairy-tale, the men ingreen fell to the ground and clutched their heads in bitter frustration. Francehad taken the victory which form and fancy had always suggested, but Irelandhad discovered their pride.

From 20 points down after 49 minutes, and heading for the kind of beating whichwould surely have signalled a massive bloodletting in the Irish ranks, theyshook their fists, dug in their heels and reminded themselves that they, too,can play this game with the best.

In the end, they fell heart-rendingly short, but they had contributed to thefinest match this Six Nations is likely to see, and they had, even in defeat,re-established themselves as the rugby force they were before their miserableWorld Cup experiences.

For their part, the French will be wondering how they almost allowed the gameto get away after a first half in which their backs ran spectacularly wild andthe superb Vincent Clerc took a hat-trick of tries.

The warnings for Ireland were there as early as the fourth minute, whenAurelien Rougerie took a quick tap penalty and set off on a run of fully 70yards. Ireland infringed at the breakdown, but Jean-Baptiste Elissalde missedthe simple penalty.

Inside 10 minutes, Rougerie had slashed any number of gaping gashes in theIrish defence, yet men in green were starting to have their say. In the 12thminute, a wondrously intricate Irish move was carried out at pace, and onlyDimitri Szarzewski's tackle on Eoin Reddan denied the try they deserved.Athenry broke out across the Stade for the first time, and Ireland started tobelieve in themselves.

In such a mood, they were desperately unfortunate to fall behind in 15 minutes, when France captain Lionel Nallet battered his way jewelry-t through a ruck and allowedElissalde to insert a teasingly precise kick. Clerc simply flew down the leftwing to win the touchdown, Elissalde converting.

Two minutes later, a well-struck penalty from Ronan O'Gara hauled Ireland backa little, but a minute further on, France delivered what seemed the decisiveblow, as David Skrela, straight-backed and swift, set off on an urgent run downthe left, wafted an extravagant dummy and sent in Clerc for his second try.

Yet, Irish chances continued to emerge, indeed they enjoyed territorialadvantage, but they lacked that cutting edge which France possessed in dramaticabundance. Another O'Gara penalty was slim reward for their efforts, and it wasrendered irrelevant by another French try.

It was the product of another ferocious counter-attack, the ball flashingthrough a bewildering array of hands.

Cedric Heymans injected pace and Clerc, a finisher par excellence, celebratedhis hat-trick with a flourish of a dive, Elissalde converting.

So, 19-6 at half-time, with the Dax band belting out its time-honouredrepertoire, the crowd singing Roll Out The Barrel and Paris going splendidly, stridently wild. Then nine minutes into the second half, the French ran in yetanother try, with Match Facts

Elissalde's kick half-blocked by Brian O'Driscoll and Heymans the flyerscreeching though the spaces like a Ferrari through a field of tractors to dabit down beneath the posts.

Elissalde converted for 26-6, and we wondered just how bad the beating mightbecome. Mercifully, Ireland were untroubled by such fears.

Former Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer carded an opening 67 in pursuit of his fourth KLM Dutch Open title at Zandvoort.

But his 17-year-old son Stefan, an amateur who plays off plus- one, ran up a 12 on one hole and needed a 40-foot par putt on the last to ensure he avoided a three-figure score.

Langer jnr equalled the second worst score on the European Tour - though he was well shy of the 111 carded by Mark James at the 1978 Italian Open.

And Bernhard, who turns 50 on Monday, revealed the teenager was making major swing changes and has been struggling to find his game for months.

"I was afraid it might happen," said Langer, who gave up the chance to compete at the FedEx Cup in America to play with his son for the first time.

"I knew he was not playing well. When you can't do the old swing or the new, you're caught in between cartier pasha and scoring mounts up rapidly then.

"I didn't expect him to make the cut as it is such a tough golf course. He is trying to make some changes but if you hit it sideways here, you're going to lose some balls."

Stefan did that on the par-five 2nd - his 11th hole of the day - when he lost two balls off the tee. His third tee shot was found but was in an unplayable lie so he returned to the tee to play his seventh on his way to a 12.

"There are two ways to react," added Langer snr. "You either stick in or put your head in the sand and give up. I don't think that's what he is made of but we will find out."

Stefan, who plans to go to college in America, said: "It's discouraging but I will stick with it.

"I hit only one fairway and not many greens and you can't score like that.

"This is one of the most punishing courses especially if you miss the fairway, but I thought it was a good opportunity to learn and it's better than walking outside the ropes."

At the other end of the leaderboard, David Carter, David Lynn, Steve Webster and Andrew Coltart carded opening 65s to sit a shot off the lead held by Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Gonnet and Taichi Teshima of Japan.

Football CASILLAS BE FAB FOR S
DATE: 07/28/2010 22:34:56 / MOOD:

IKER CASILLAS wants Cesc Fabregas to reproduce his stunning Arsenal form on the international stage to save Spain from missing out on Euro 2008.

Like England, Luis Aragones' side are in danger of elimination in the qualifiers if they lose in Denmark today.

But the Real Madrid keeper believes the young midfielder, who the Spanish champions again tried to recruit over the summer, holds the key to winning Group F - and making a challenge in the finals next summer.

"Cesc has become a star at Arsenal - he is someone who is maturing very quickly," Cassilas said.

"Before he had other players around him like Thierry Henry who were bigger names than him but now he is the man who has to take the leadership role.

"He has got a great deal of talent and a bright future ahead of him. If he ever decided to come back to Spain, there would be a queue of clubs wanting to sign him. Now he also has to take the same responsibility with the national team and be the main man."

Despite the superstars in the two sides, England and Spain face crucial matches over the next week on the road to Austria and Patek Philippe Grand Complications Switzerland.

And Casillas (above), who has insured his hands for pounds 5m this season, reckons Euro 2008 will be the poorer if either fails to make it. "I do see similarities," said the Spanish skipper.

"The two teams have great players but struggle to get through for these championships.

"It would be a disaster for the tournament and for our professional careers if we don't make it.

"But once there, both of us would be among the favourites to win."
